I may soon swap a few tubes, but the 12AX7's are ok. If I had to sell it I could only get $200-$275 for her, but I would certainly pay top dollar if I had to.ĭid I mention it is heavy? It also has a good reverb if you don't like a ton, but turned above 5, the spring reverb gets very bright and clingy. I am sure I could get as good of a sound out of the custom amps or maybe a tweaked Bassman, but I only paid $200 for her and it probably will be a long time before I find anything comparable. It does remind me of some of the sweat sounds you get from the old Fender blackfaces but I really think it is fuller and it don't have to be turned to 9 to be outstanding. Surprising, it sounds great turned down too. The stage volume is of couse great switched to 60 watts, but it runs off of 4 warm 6L6 tubes when switched to 120 so that's where it stays. It's not as bad since the big wheels have been added. It fixes them fans that hang around following you everywhere during set-up asking to help lol. Usually I trick someone else into caring it. I rate this amp as a 10 because it's huge sounding tone is certainly worth having to find someone gullible enough to carry it inside for you. It is almost like it was made for harmonica!ĭean Markley does not service these amps anymore, but there old tech still has plenty of parts to keep mine up he says. It has a much fuller sound than any amp I ever heard to date and the only bad thing I can say is "It is heavy as hell" and "It sucks for guitar (unless you play for George Jones), with a very twangy sound using a Stratt or Les Paul". This amp really does the trick! I certainly would NOT trade it back off for my past tweed champ or my Bassman RI. I turn the gain knob up a tad often for a bright vintage sounding hiss, but you better do it sparingly the knobs on this amp are very sensitive.

I set channel one to give me my signature BIG, clean growling sound I have always looked for, channel two is set still clean (as long as the volume or master is turned down (depending on how you set it), the 2nd channel a little louder than the 1st with that big bite a touch cleaner than Paul Butterfield and then push the lead (with gain turned very low) and it gives the full Chicago (close to Butterfield) sound. This is a huge sounding amp with lots of volume! The other night I compared her on stage to a vintage Fender Twin and the Fender didn't last at all in the tone factor.

With the new speakers inside it is certainly a back-breaker and barley fits in the cab of my Ford Ranger, but I carry it to all my gigs that I drive to anyway, cursing it as I drag her out the back, knowing she's worth all the effort. I had just placed 2 new matching speakers inside w/o ever hearing the original speakers (they were unrepairble). It originally came from a trade-in from a local "guru" harp player who wanted an old Fender Deluxe, but he came back to the store with regret to see it gone (HA HA HA). It has the original GE tubes in it and they don't even look like they have ever been warmed up. Lets start by saying "I sold a great sounding Fender amp for this junky looking thing and haven't regretted it one bit!" It has that cool blues look with the blonde tolex pealing off (showing that beautiful, thick hardwood cabinet underneath). Note: All comments were drawn with me using my vintage Shure 565 (pistol grip) 80% of the time and when dirtier is preferred: Swapping between a Shure Green Bullet (crystal element) and my lovely plastic bullet (Shure 450) with a HOT controlled magnetic element (mic given to me by 'Harmonica John' Frazer) My Review: After 40+ performances w/ this amp Made in late 70's by the respectable JMF Electronics
